FISH HABITAT SPECIALIST

The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Fish Habitat Specialist in our Yreka office, Siskiyou County.
This position performs and assists in the direction of designing, installation and maintenance of fish screens, ladders and other fish habitat improvement structures.
Helps direct and performs difficult repairs and adjustments to these facilities and is required to think and act creatively.
This will require expertise in shop fabrication as well as construction site techniques through the use of steel, concrete and wood among other materials.
Works with land owners, other government agencies and various other groups and individuals to acquire access agreements, permits and other paperwork needed to accomplish various construction and habitat project objectives.
Assists in budget development, material and equipment procurement, and implementing the facility safety program.
Maintains shop grounds, shop machinery, vehicles and construction equipment to ensure safe working order and makes necessary repairs.
Operates shop machinery, construction equipment, medium and light tractors, backhoes, various truck type vehicles and all-terrain vehicles.
Periodically works on blasting projects, invasive species treatment projects under the supervision of licensed personnel.

Working Conditions Ability to use a computer and standard word processing software.
Ability to operate a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, construction equipment and all-terrain vehicle.
Spend approximately 50% of time indoors fabricating and performing equipment maintenance and spend the other approximate 50% of time outdoors in rugged terrain, hot and freezing conditions, experience biting insects, and some overnight camping in the construction of fish screening and habitat projects.
Occasional travel may be required.
The use of personal protective equipment is required (e.
g.
, eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, etc.
) to perform all aspects of the essential job functions previously described in a safe manner.
Incumbent will wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and conducting site visits.
The incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection equipment while painting with oil-based paints or during other activities producing noxious/hazardous fumes.
As such, Cal/OSHA requires that the incumbent be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment.
Additionally, the incumbent is required to participate annually in the CDFW Respirator Protection Program.
