Ashland Food Co-op (AFC) is seeking a motivated and analytical person with a passion for sustainability and equity to join our team as the Strategic Energy Management (SEM) Intern.
This position will assist the AFC Sustainability Coordinator in analyzing and modeling natural gas and electricity use, and implementing programs that will contribute to achieving our vision of being carbon neutral by 2030.
Candidates should have recent education related to the field, and a desire to grow professionally while helping AFC achieve its 2030 Vision.
A minimum of 80 hours during the year is required, though approximately eight (8) hours per week is available for approved projects.
These could include measurement and data collection, energy modeling, and program design and implementation.

Job Summary: Organize and execute all milestones and projects to support Ashland Food Co-op’s involvement in the Energy Trust of Oregon’s Strategic Energy Management (SEM) Program.
Sustainability General Responsibilities: A sample of activities is as follows: The intern will focus at least 50% of their time identifying, prioritizing, and assisting the Ashland Food Co-op’s designated Energy Team members in performing eligible SEM-related activities at Ashland Food Co-op’s enrolled sites and will work a minimum of 6 hours per week on SEM related activities.
The intern will deliver a final presentation of their SEM activities to Ashland Food Co-op’s Energy Team, and invite the Energy Trust to attend the completion presentation.
The intern will use best efforts to attend all of the SEM workshops scheduled to occur during the internship.
The intern will spend 95% of their time working with the Sustainability Coordinator/Energy champion on SEM related data entry, metrics, building analysis and reporting and 5% on general organizational activities.
To complete the program, the intern is expected to complete the following: Deliver a final presentation, and a PPT or PDF copy of the presentation.
Complete the Intern Exit Survey.
Log all hours worked in the AFC payroll system and update the SEM Intern Hour Tracker weekly.
Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Highly organized and detail-oriented.
Knowledgeable regarding sustainability issues, energy systems, and metrics.
Self-motivated and able to work with little supervision.
Exhibit leadership in building awareness and support for sustainability issues.
Able to follow through on projects to completion.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong analytical abilities and project coordination.
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
Ability to work independently as well as being a strong team player.
Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
Regular and reliable attendance of SEM workshops and Energy Team meetings.
Valid driver’s license.
Currently enrolled in college or recently graduated in a related major.
Ability to keep information confidential.
Desire to increase energy conservation facility-wide through metrics and collaboration.
Must be a solution-oriented person with a positive can-do attitude.
Must have a high mechanical aptitude and excellent trouble-shooting ability.
