Duties As the Forestry Technician (Cruiser/Appraiser) in this position, you will: The incumbent would lead the resource area in all timber measurement, scaling, and appraisal assignments.
This would include basic tree measurements and log measurements using common measurement instruments.
Lead cruiser/appraiser on 3P sales and commonly used cruise methods.
Leads, mentors, and assists other cruisers/appraisers in the Field Office Incumbent leads timber sale appraisal work.
Enters cruise data into field polycorders and downloads information.
Utilizes computer applications used in the cruiser/appraiser program.
Leads, attends, and completes all training required for the cruiser/appraiser/scaling program.
The level of difficulty and responsibility for these assignments will be determined by the employee's grade level at the time of the assignment.

Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying.
GS-10 Level Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) Timber cruising, appraising, and scaling (2) Monitoring and inspecting timber sale operations having conventional contract requirements and conditions; and (3) Preparing written reports of all timber cruises, scaling, and appraisals.
GS-11 Level Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing 3 or more of the following: (1) Performing timber sale preparation duties and collection of timber presale information data as well as completed appraisals of timber sales; (2) selecting contract provisions based on environmental assessment documents; (3) Monitoring.
scaling, and inspected timber sale operations having conventional contract requirements and conditions; and (4) Conducting cruises of timber stands to determine volume of merchantable timber, species composition, accessibility, and environment constraints.
Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.

Physical Demands: The field work requires stamina, conditioning, and good general health to withstand the rigors of protracted periods of climbing and descending steep slopes carrying equipment and supplies in excess of 25 pounds.
Work in the field requires long periods of time and physical exertion in extremely rugged terrain, often under adverse weather conditions.
The rigors of the job put unusual strain on backs, knee ligaments, and ankles.
Working Conditions: The incumbent primarily works outdoors in a forest environment where the footing is extremely uneven, sometimes unstable, often steep, with excessive vegetation and logging debris covering the ground making for a very high risk of tripping or falling.
The work is conducted in all weather conditions including ice, snow, hail, rain, wind, and extreme high and low temperatures.
The incumbent will be exposed to insect bites, stings, poisonous snakes, toxic or poisonous plants, tree marking paint, overhead hazards, rolling logs, rolling rocks, etc.
The incumbent works around heavy logging equipment, log scale yard equipment, and road building equipment.
Work necessitates the use of protective equipment such as hard hat, gloves, high visibility vest, eye and hearing protection, rain gear, and traction soled shoes (caulked boots).
The incumbent must be able to operate and ride in a motor vehicle traveling on narrow mountainous terrain, with blind curves, one vehicle width, and extremely steep drop-offs where heavy equipment is often encountered.
Incumbent may also be required to operate off-highway vehicles or snow machines to access remote work areas.
Telework: The Bureau of Land Management has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
