POSITION TITLE: Hospital Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides supervision and implementation of staff scheduling, patient census management, and hospital activities for 24-hour hospital operations.
Assures that staffing needs of nursing care units are met and coordinates activities interdepartmentally.
Functions as hospital administration’s representative during non-business hours (1700 – 0800), weekends and holidays.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Implements staffing and patient census management guidelines.
Determines the staffing needs for the oncoming shift based on the set staffing guidelines, budgeted hours of care and competency of available personnel in accordance with plans developed by the Department Directors and Director of Staffing Operations.
Assures that during the shift a qualified staff workload balance is maintained by evaluating and redirecting assignments of staff/patients as activities dictate; providing an optimum utilization of assigned personnel.
Oversees the nursing care on an assigned shift with knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques including evidenced based practice.
Applies this knowledge in accordance with the Medical Centers policies and procedures and within the laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon.
Maintain up to date records of census, admits, transfers and discharges.
Regularly attends Hospital Supervisor staff meetings.
Maintains a safe facility, patient and family friendly environment and effectively monitors all aspects of hospital.
Regularly rounds all units and departments during each shift.
This included rounding on staff, families, administration, and physicians to identify service issues and opportunities for improvement to develop and maintain effective communication, follow through and working relationships.
Facilitates resolution of any issues identified either by immediate follow through for service recovery, corrective actions, or delegation to appropriate hospital representatives for immediate or timely resolution.
Assures appropriate hospital safety and risk management according to fire, safety, disaster and security plans.
Provides feedback to appropriate Department Directors, Clinical Managers, Risk Manager and Administrator on-call.
Obtain needed pharmaceutical materials during the hours the pharmacy is closed.
Assures organizational compliance to all state and federal requirements/hospital policies and procedures.
Adheres to the processes contained in the Hospital Supervisors manual.
Provides coaching in the implementation, utilization, and support of any and all electronic infrastructure (e.
g.
time and attendance, scheduling, EMR, PACs, Monitoring).
MARGINAL JOB DUTIES:

Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
3 years general nursing experience in an acute-care setting with up-to-date clinical competence for delivery of direct patient care; experience in front line supervision; demonstrated competence in the areas of leadership, judgment, problem resolution, critical thinking and decision making in a crisis situation; documented excellent customer service and interpersonal and oral/written communication skills; Knowledge and application of acute care, patient safety, general nursing practice and therapy, critical thinking and analysis; Knowledge and experience in utilization of computer systems in a patient care setting (e.
g.
EMR, PACs, Monitoring) and nursing informatics; Knowledge of administrative, patient and personnel policies including progressive discipline process; and demonstrated knowledge of staffing guidelines and methodologies.
PREFERRED: BSN
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Medium to high physical and mental demands.
Cognitive skills necessary to perform essential job functions using independent judgment in high stress, highly turbulent health care settings.
Physical demands at the RN II level.
Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, and spend equal percentage of time walking, standing, and sitting throughout shift.
Able to work under stress and under constant time demands while effectively prioritizing the management of multiple projects/duties with flexibility.
Must be able to function effectively during crisis or trauma events.
Possess the requisite visual, auditory, and fine motor skills required by direct patient care nursing.
