per month LEAD CUSTODIAN Maintenance and Custodial Department Purpose: The Lead Custodian helps ensure the health and safety of students, staff, administrators and the public by directing and leading custodial operations at District facilities.
Reports to: Principal or Assistant Principal Indirectly Reports to: Building Secretary Nature of Work: The Lead Custodian performs work of a recurring nature under general supervision.
The nature of the work requires following established policies and procedures.
Because this job involves frequent interaction with students, staff and parents, the position requires a high level of professional decorum, courtesy, politeness, and customer service.
Because this job involves requires organizing, leading and directing the activities of the custodial staff, the position requires significant organizational and managerial aptitude.
Supervision Exercised: No direct supervision, but significant indirect supervisory responsibilities.
Interface: Primarily interfaces with school administrators, school personnel, students and visitors.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The Day Lead Custodian typically leads a staff of 1-2 custodians.
The Night Lead Custodian typically leads a staff of 4-8 custodians and has greater interface with members of the public.
Essential Job Functions: Organizes and directs members of the custodial staff in the performance of routine cleaning and maintenance duties, including vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, waxing, disinfecting, burnishing and polishing.
Prepares custodial work schedules and ensures assigned tasks are carried out in accordance with District standards.
Trains newly hired personnel, in particular with regard to the safe use of cleaning chemicals and proper operation of maintenance equipment.
Establishes cleaning schedules in consultation with school administrators.
Cleans windows, walls, floors, carpets, lavatories, showers, sinks, mirrors and water fountains.
Performs general landscaping tasks, including trimming shrubbery and trees, mowing and edging lawns and removing leaves.
Refills dispensers for soap, paper towels, toilet paper and similar containers.
Empties and cleans wastepaper baskets and other refuse receptacles and picks up litter as necessary.
Moves and arranges desks, chairs, supplies, furniture and other equipment as needed, including for set-up of rooms for school, District and community functions.
Removes spots, markings and graffiti from surfaces of walls, floors, windows, woodwork, furniture and carpets.
Operates various pieces of power equipment, including power sweepers, pressure washers, vacuums ,burnishers, mowers, edgers, weed eaters and leaf blowers.
Responds to requests for immediate cleaning services.
Ensures custodial equipment is properly cleaned and stored and maintained in proper working order.
Maintains custodial storage facilities in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
Performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment.
Monitors inventory of custodial supplies and orders replacements from the District warehouse as needed.
Inspects District buildings for fire, sanitary or safety hazards and reports findings to appropriate supervisors.
Maintains effective and respectful working relationships with staff and students.

Required Qualifications: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must have demonstrated experience in custodial work or facilities management.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Must be able to read, write, understand and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.
Working Conditions: The Lead Custodian works largely works indoors, but will also work outside in all kinds of weather, and often in the dark.
Most of the custodian’s work-time involves undertaking activities of a physical nature.
Seasonal weather-related activity such as cleaning leaves in the fall, ice and snow in the winter and window cleaning in the summer months may require prolonged work time outside.
The incumbent will be regularly exposed to odors, fumes, dirt and dust.
Other potential hazards include but are not limited to cleaning chemicals, communicable diseases, sharp objects, hand operated power equipment and slippery surfaces.
The Lead Custodian will spend most work hours standing, and will in the course of the workday regularly be required to bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, reach and climb ladders – sometimes for prolonged periods.
