ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Maintains an in-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards and techniques, and applies this knowledge in accordance with Sky Lakes policies and procedures and within laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon.
Maintains overall responsibility for patient care in the ED.
Functions as a care manager/caregiver by assessing the patient’s condition and nursing needs; demonstrates patients plan of care by setting outcomes; implements appropriate nursing actions to meet the patient’s physical, emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual needs.
Promotes healing by maintaining a peaceful, orderly, and clean environment.
Assigns and supervises patient care tasks to team members within respective practice parameters.
Evaluates/ corrects/ directs/ redirects care and assignment of staff as patient needs, and outcome, and staffing activity dictate.
Has responsibility to identify and communicate unit staffing needs as per Nursing Department staffing matrix, patient acuity and professional judgment and to report valid inadequate staffing to management.
Follow up by evaluating patient’s progress.
Ensures nursing care is accomplished effectively and efficiently and that the medical regime for each patient is carried out as prescribed by the physician in collaboration with other disciplines.
Maintains quality and efficiency standards as set by the immediate supervisor and makes recommendations for improvements.
Participates with health care team members in facilitating patients and families learning throughout the hospital experience in preparation for discharge.
Reinforces patients continued health care through teaching and/or referral to case management/social services for community agency follow-up.
Maintains a constant awareness of the legal aspects of nursing and demonstrates his/her decisions and documentation regarding patient care within the Registered Nurses scope of practice.
Reports to Nursing Management any work performance problems, policy violations, or misconduct by non RN’s supervised on unit.
Provides ongoing education to hospital staff regarding patient care in the form of in-services and individual orientation to the philosophy of health care and health care procedures.
Attends departmental and other meetings as requested by the immediate supervisor and is accountable for the information given.
Maintains an in-depth knowledge/competency of emergency nursing principles, practice, protocols, and procedures and applies this knowledge and skill in accordance with Sky Lakes Emergency Department Standards of Care.
Will assume department specific change nurse roles and responsibilities when accepting the charge nurse differential.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
Basic nursing skills; Must be willing to work varied hours with flexible schedules and every other weekend.
Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
PREFERRED:
Basic knowledge of psychosocial concepts and problem-solving skills; Appropriate Emergency Services/Critical Care practice experience (in past three years).
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Must have ability to adapt emotional responses to the needs of people of varying temperament and disability.
Must be physically able to stoop, bend, reach and frequently lift 50 pounds or more.
Continuous walking and/or standing throughout shift required.
Must maintain knowledge of and practice safe body mechanics according to Sky Lakes policies.
